MAPS: How Butler County voted, precinct by precinct
Former President Donald Trump carried Butler County as turnout dipped slightly, especially in urban centers. Take a look at how your precinct voted with interactive maps.
As Donald Trump carried every swing state that has been called so far in the 2024 presidential election, Republican candidates swept every race in Butler County. Trump improved on his margins in the reliably conservative county, earning 62.5% of the vote compared to his 61.3% result in 2020.
Turnout decreased slightly from 2020 among Butler County voters but remained above 70%. Voting trends differed across precincts, both in terms of turnout and candidate choices.
Here’s a breakdown of the key statistics in the county this year.
Trump carries Butler County easily
Trump won at least 50% of the vote in 251 of Butler County’s more than 290 precincts. In West Chester’s 24th precinct, Trump and Vice-President Kamala Harris tied with 341 votes each, while seven voters cast ballots for other candidates.
Trump’s best performance came in the county’s townships, particularly Morgan and Madison Township. In 26 precincts, Trump carried 80% or more of the vote, and in Morgan Township’s second precinct he came out with 88.4% of the vote.
Just 11 precincts had less than 30% of voters cast ballots for Trump, including seven in Oxford. Hamilton 2, Ward 2 was the only precinct where less than 20% of the vote went to Trump.
Among the top 20 precincts with the best margins for Harris, turnout sat at an average of 46%. Meanwhile, the 20 precincts which broke for Trump by the widest margins had an average turnout of 80.1%. Four precincts centered on Miami University and student housing areas in Oxford all had turnout of 20% or less.
Turnout highest in rural areas
Butler County’s northern and western townships had the highest turnout among voters. In 75 precincts, 80% or more of registered voters cast ballots this year, particularly in Liberty, Morgan and Ross Townships.
Turnout was lowest in the most urban parts of the county in Oxford, Hamilton and Middletown, failing to break 50% in 26 precincts. Fur precincts centered on Miami and student housing areas in Oxford recorded the lowest turnout, failing to break 20%. Turnout can appear lower on college campuses because students who graduate and move away don’t always remember to update their voter registration, Director of Butler County Board of Elections Nicole Unzicker previously told the Oxford Free Press.
Five precincts recorded drops of 15% or more in voter turnout compared to 2020, including four in Oxford. Oxford’s 7th precinct, which includes student housing to the northwest of campus, had a 40% change in turnout, dropping from 33% in 2020 to just under 20% this year.
In total, 234 precincts which existed in 2020 recorded drops in turnout (Butler County has added nine precincts since the 2020 election, primarily in Liberty Township).
Oxford’s 6th and 11th precincts which cover the southern side of Miami University’s campus had the biggest increases in turnout, jumping by 24% and 52% respectively. Only two other precincts in Lemon Township and Trenton saw changes of more than 10% in turnout.
