Two males are facing charges following a violent assault reported to Oxford police at 11:45 p.m. Sept. 7, just outside Brick Street Bar.

According to a police report from the Oxford Police Department (OPD), two suspects initiated a fight with two individuals. The altercation escalated when one of the suspects slammed the victim to the ground and placed him in a chokehold for more than 10 seconds.

Criminal complaints filed by an OPD officer on Sept. 13 identify Jake Cameron, 19, and Kyle Willging, 22, as the suspects. Cameron faces a third degree felony strangulation charge, two first degree misdemeanor assault charges and one second degree charge of criminal damages for damaging one victim’s phone. Willging is being charged with first degree misdemeanor assault. Neither suspect is listed in Miami University’s directory as a current student.

The complaint filed against Cameron alleges that one of the victims “became unconscious during the choke hold and two bystanders had to pry Cameron off [the victim].” An arraignment was scheduled for Sept. 19.

A video that matches the description of the incident in the criminal complaints was posted to social media on Sept. 16. The video shows two shirtless males fighting two separate victims outside the entrance to Brick Street Bar in front of a crowd of witnesses. One of the victims is thrown to the ground and then picked up and put into a chokehold for several seconds. Two witnesses then intervened to pull the suspect off of the victim, who falls forward and hits his head on the ground.

The victim was taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital following the incident.

As of the moment, the police have recovered two pieces of evidence: the Brick Street flash drive and the suspect’s gray t-shirt.

According to OPD’s weekly media incident summaries, officers responded to eight calls related to assault and domestic violence between Sept. 2 and Sept. 16.
