OPD to hold free three-month Citizens Police Academy
Looking to learn more about how local law enforcement works? The Oxford Police Department is holding a three-month course on everything from undercover investigations to the court system.
The Oxford Police Department (OPD) is once again accepting registrations for its annual Citizens Police Academy.
The Citizens Police Academy is a free program designed to give Oxford residents a chance to learn more about local law enforcement. The program runs weekly from 6:30-9 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 5 through April 28.
“If [people] attend this, then maybe the first time they’re meeting this officer is not at the scene of a crash or when they’re having a bad day,” said OPD Chief John Jones. “It’s in this classroom setting where they can get to see the resources that are in their community.”
Throughout the Academy’s three-month program, attendees will learn more about OPD’s social services liaison, the court system, undercover investigations and more. New this year, the program will also feature extra Saturday classes on women’s self defense, active killer response and decision making. While most classes are held at the Oxford Police Station, some involve travel to other locations.
Jones said the program attracts a mix of students, working residents and retirees each year, and some attendees have gone on to become citizens on patrol volunteers.
“Ultimately, we’re paid with tax dollars,” Jones said, “so it’s important for the citizens to know what kind of product they’re getting.”
People interested in attending the police academy should register by emailing Officer Matt Wagers at mwagers@cityofoxford.org or calling 513-524-5240.
