Oxford’s City Council unanimously passed a resolution to move forward with the new dog park project across from Leonard Howell Park at the last council meeting on Sept. 17. The resolution enabled the Parks and Recreation department to accept a bid from Buckeye Fence Builders to build fencing for the park.

The agreement sets aside no more than $62,000 for the fencing. Buckeye Fence Builders will not construct the park’s concrete pads, drinking fountains, benches or other park items. Casey Wooddell, park and recreation director, said during the meeting that those items will be coordinated.

“This is essentially step one of moving forward,” Wooddell said.

The city has allocated $90,000 total for the project. According to a staff report from the Sept. 17 meeting, the park could open as soon as late October.

Oxford’s existing dog park, Northside Bark, located on Morning Sun Rd, is heavily used, which prompted the initiation of the project. The new park is set to be three times larger than the current one and will feature two sections for dogs of different sizes to play in.

“The existing dog park is not going away,” Wooddell said. “It’s going remain at least temporarily, we’ll monitor it, we’ll find out if it’s still being used and if we want to maintain it as a dog park or if we want to repurpose it back into a neighborhood park.”
