Oxford man charged with felony for alleged assault of father
A 29-year-old Oxford man has been charged with a felony for allegedly hitting his father in the head with a 10-pound weight, court filings show.
An Oxford man is facing a second degree felony charge after allegedly assaulting his father with a weight.
Dakota Allen West, 29, was arrested Feb. 14 after an alleged altercation with his father. According to an incident report filed by the Oxford Police Department, two officers were dispatched to the father’s apartment after receiving a call that he had been hit in the head with a 10-pound weight and was bleeding.
The victim had “severe head lacerations and was covered in blood” when the officers and Oxford Fire Department arrived on scene. West had fled and was not present. The victim alleged that West had “tried to kill” him but was unable to provide a witness statement before being transported to West Chester Hospital. A witness told the officers he had heard thumping and saw West “throwing a weight on the ground.” The witness picked up the weight and brought it to a different apartment before showing it to the officers.
Police Chief John Jones responded to the scene in addition to the officers. Another sergeant with the department located West, who cooperated and was apprehended with squad backup. West was transported to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, where he alleged that he went to his father’s apartment to confront him about sexual abuse of himself and his sister. According to the incident report, West “could not produce any evidence of this.”
In addition to the felony charge, West is facing a first-degree misdemeanor charge for domestic violence. West was still in Butler County Jail Custody as of 1 p.m. Feb. 19.
West has been charged with criminal activity in the past, including a fifth degree felony charge for obstructing official business last summer. While being apprehended for attempted theft, West resisted arrest, and one of the OPD officers who responded ended up with a fractured bone in his hand, according to criminal complaints filed in July 2024. West was charged with additional misdemeanors for resisting arrest, attempted theft and possession of a drug abuse instrument. The case was referred to a grand jury on Aug. 1 and a plea or trial setting had been scheduled for Feb. 27, according to court records.
OPD responded to several additional incidents between Feb. 10 and 17, including four thefts and one case of domestic violence. On Feb. 11, the department collected a rape kit from McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital.
