Police-Community Commission gets update on parking enforcement process
Oxford's parking enforcement is handled by a team of public safety assistants. One of them spoke about the process during a PCRRC meeting March 6.
Members of Oxford’s Police Community Relations and Review Commission (PCRRC) learned more about the work Oxford’s public safety assistants do during a meeting March 6.
Angela Schatzle, one of three full-time public safety assistants, said the position focuses on both parking and animal control. Four additional PSAs focus on parking enforcement only.
In 2024, Oxford issued nearly 18,700 parking citations, most of which were for meter violations. The city collected more than $350,000 in fine amounts, while meter revenue came out to almost $550,000.
Oxford has a process for people to challenge citations. Of the 1,097 appeals reviewed, Schatzle said, 56% were dismissed or reduced to warnings.
Beyond parking and animal control, Schatzle said the full-time PSAs also assist with needs like meter repairs, citizen assist calls and helping the service department during snow emergencies.
Oxford Police Department (OPD) Lieutenant Lara Fening recently retired from the department. At the PCRRC meeting, Police Chief John Jones said they are in the final stages of selecting a new lieutenant, who is required to come from within OPD. The department will then work to fill a sergeant position by the end of March, Jones said.
