Talawanda to host community forum on school funding
As the Ohio legislature continues to work on its biennial state budget, the Talawanda School District will host a community forum focused on how state funding impacts public education locally.
The Talawanda School District will lead a community forum about Ohio’s state budget and its impacts on local schools from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, March 24 at Talawanda High School’s Performing Arts Center.
Ohio needs to pass its state budget every two years, and a large portion of public school budgets come from the state. Roughly 23% of Talawanda’s revenue comes from Ohio, while more than 60% comes from local tax revenue.
Some state lawmakers have suggested reductions in public school funding during the current budget cycle. Talawanda Treasurer Shaunna Tafelski previously told the Oxford Free Press that if one funding mechanism known as the guarantee is removed from the state budget this year, Talawanda could lose up to $2.2 million in the next fiscal year and lose more than two months’ worth of cash on hand by fiscal year 2029.
The community forum March 24 is open to the public and cosponsored by the Oxford League of Women Voters. The event will focus on providing “factual information on the state budget and the impacts to Talawanda School District,” according to a social media post by the League of Women Voters.
