Dozens of Oxford residents marched Uptown Feb. 17 in solidarity with protestors across the country who held similar rallies to protest President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s efforts to reshape the U.S. government.

Though temperatures didn’t hit 20 degrees, roughly 70 people still attended the march from the Oxford Municipal Building to the Uptown parks during the President’s Day event. Many held signs reading “Save jobs, fire Musk,” “The United States abides no king” and other slogans.

The marches across the country were all held at noon. In the month since President Trump took office, he has worked quickly to impose drastic changes, many of which are being implemented by Musk, the world’s richest person. Musk and his team, many of whom are not yet 25, have gained access to sensitive information across agencies in what they call an effort to improve government efficiency.

Opponents of Musk have called his and Musk’s actions unconstitutional. However, the Republican-controlled Congress has done little to curb the Trump administration’s power, and Democrats have struggled to follow a unified opposition strategy. The Oxford march was inspired by similar demonstrations across the country coordinated by the 50501 Movement.
