"Write" Uptown is an "Ask Me" column designed to get the most out of living in Oxford.

My name is Sally Roi, a lifetime resident of Oxford and graduate of Miami University. I have always worked at local restaurants and in banking, but since January of 2023 I have been the Operations Manager of Enjoy Oxford, Oxford’s Visitors Bureau.

Before working for Enjoy Oxford I thought I knew everything about Oxford; boy was I wrong! With my unique perspective, I want to share my knowledge and help you enjoy Oxford to its fullest.

To start; let’s talk about Saturdays in the summer. There is so much to do, and most of it is free. Let’s walk through a perfect Oxford Saturday; start your day with Yoga in the Park (no registration needed, but don’t forget your mats) at the Uptown Pavilion from 9-10 a.m. Since you’re already Uptown, head straight over to the award-winning Oxford Farmers Market for fresh, local finds. The Oxford Farmer’s Market sets up every Saturday from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The rest of your day can be filled with any number of activities! Enjoy a walk or a bike ride on the new Oxford Area Trails; these trails are still in progress but many phases are already completed, and they’re some of the best in the area. Staying in the realm of enjoying Oxford’s natural areas, try some of Hueston Woods Nature Center Programs. We are so lucky to have a State Park so close to us, and Hueston Woods offers different free programs throughout the year such as archery, kayaking and fossil hunting. You can find their programs on Enjoy Oxford’s calendar at enjoyoxford.org/calendar.

Maybe you’d prefer to stay inside for the remainder of the day. We’ve definitely had some extremely hot days, so an entire day outside can be intolerable! Try going to You’re Fired to paint your own ceramics or a wooden project. Even though walk-ins are welcome, you may want to make a reservation to ensure you don’t have to wait. One more option of a fun, inside activity is to visit the McGuffey House & Museum on Miami’s Campus. The museum is open 1-5 p.m. on Saturdays in the summers and offers a great way to learn about the history of the area.

Looking for suggestions on how to spend your time? Want to know more about local businesses and organizations in and around Oxford? Interested in how you can make the most of living in a college town with thousands of students? Email me your questions about Enjoying Oxford at write.uptownsally@gmail.com and watch for my column the third Friday of every month.
